PRODUCT DESIGN The Vertical Template Method |
||
|
One of the best methods to form accurate and precision crafted models is the lathe method using a template. To begin, trace the outline of the design onto a piece of metal. Then cut the metal to form the new template. Mount the template to the lathe. As the lathe begins to turn add wet plaster to the metal rod. Continue adding more plaster to the rod until the new model is completely formed. We use this method to create lamp bases, vases, pitchers, architectural moldings and so on. To create accurate and precise items such as tableware, plates, cups, bowls, ceiling medallions and so on, these designs are turned horizontally rather than vertically. By using this method you are able to allow for the shrinkage of the fired clay body. Most earthenware bodies shrinkage 6.25%. Stoneware and porcelain bodies will shrink even more. You can allow for these shrinkages by the increasing the size of the template by the appropriate percentages. We have been creating thousands of accurate design items using the template method long before CAD/CAM and CMC methods were developed. Today, we offer custom turned designs for many companies wishing to complete their projects in-house. For your next design project, contact Masterline at information@masterlinemolds.com. |
