AN INTRODUCTION
Mold Making

The Advanced Mold Making Diploma Course is a more challenging course which begins with the planning, construction, and making of three-, four-, and multi-piece production molds.

Building a three- or four-piece mold without its leading is a challenge. We show you the correct way to build a three-piece ceramic mold around a model. Or a three-piece ceramic mold may consist of two sides plus a top or bottom piece.

Most often if the third piece is being us as a bottom piece, the mold will usually contain the 'dry-foot'.  A 'dry-foot' is an extended rim around the bottom of the model. The 'dry-foot' method is used in production molding to save having to 'slit' each piece individually. Before firing the piece of ceramic, the 'dry-foot' is wiped clean of glaze,

Also included in a  discussion and demonstration of building a support or 'wedge' for pieces that would normally sag or break during high-fire application. This method is used when firing porcelain and stoneware bodies.

The Advanced Diploma Course also includes the making of special 'hip sections' and other specialty 'inserts'.
