Latex is a pure form of rubber.  It is exactly like the tan colored elastic rubber band.  And like a rubber band it's elasticity will reproduce items slightly less then its original model.  We use Latex rubber with a burlap or hemp backing to make molds of larger garden statutes.  Because of the size and height of these garden statutes, any shrinkage in size is not noticeable.

Care should be exercised to affix the model to a portable board or working bench top.  The important coat is the first coat.  Take care to apply this coat without forming any bubbles.

It is better to apply two thin coats of latex rather than one thick coat.  After applying several coats of latex, layers of burlap or hemp fiber are applied to the latex mold.  The addition of this extra fiber not only supports the latex mold but also prevents it from tearing or ripping.

A 'mother mold' of Hydro Stone or fiberglass is built around the mold.  This 'mother mold' helps to support the latex mold and to keep its shape while being cast plaster or concrete.

Latex molds do wear quickly and care must be taken during the casting and de-molding of the finished products.  For this reason, most latex molds are generally replaced every year or at the end of a busy season.

It is also suggested by suppliers of latex rubber that it be cured by add heat for approximately four hours.  Sometimes, the raw latex mold may be placed in very hot water for about 30 minutes.
